Genna Donaghy’s debut novel Touch Me Not (Loose Id) released September 15, 2013. We thought we’d aim our questions at First Times. Ready?
1. What was the first Romance novel that you read? Did you love it or hate it?
When I was eleven or so, I picked up a Harlequin time travel book for .25 cents at a yard sale. I didn’t care for the romance or the underlying Christian themes, but I must have read the sex scenes–Oh man. Dozens of times over. That was enlightening.
2. What was the first M/M Romance novel that you read?
Infected by Andrea Speed. I believe I first read it on her Live Journal before she moved to Dreamspinner. I loved the gritty storyline, the clever (heartbreaking!) parallel to the werecat virus and HIV, and how it was a detective story first, romance second. It worked on so many levels. The books tore my beating heart out and showed it to me. Then they stomped on it. (And I loved it.)
3. What was the first story you ever wrote about?
Voluntarily that wasn’t part of a class assignment? I was about ten or so, and I was in A Mood. I wrote a short story complete with illustrations to horrify and gross out my friends and family about how Santa Claus got tired of eating cookies and started eating out of people’s refrigerators instead. I went into glorious detail how he’d gobble down all the food (especially the rancid tuna casseroles). He grew so heavy the reindeer couldn’t carry him anymore, and his stomach exploded.
4. When did you first realize you wanted to write?
Back in the day of Geocities (remember Geocities before Yahoo took it over and closed it?) I really got into ‘adopting’ virtual pets for my website. Well, sometimes to get the really exclusive pets, the site owners made people write stories about how your Mary Sue character impresses/adopts them. When I realized I could get pretty things in exchange for making up stories, I started to enjoy writing. Eventually, I fell in love with it for its own sake.
5. Who was the first person to encourage your writing?
My mom, by accident. I overheard her telling customers at the video store my family owned about the Santa Claus story and how talented I was. It was the exact opposite reaction I’d hoped for, but I wasn’t about to complain. 🙂
Here’s my debut novel! There’s no exploding Santa Claus (sadly), but there’s male/male soul bonding and light BDSM. So that’s fun, right?
TOUCH ME NOT:
In an alternate universe, where gender is less important than how dominant a person is, Jake Alric is the odd man out. While other subs spend their days trying to find their one true mate, Jake goes out of his way to avoid dominants. He’s seen the dark side of soul bonds, and all he wants is to be left alone to tend his small Montana cattle ranch in peace.
When an oil company starts buying up land all around town, Jake comes under increasing pressure to sell. A chance encounter brings him into contact with one of his potential mates, Henry Waterstone, son of the man trying to buy Jake’s ranch and a handsome dominant who pushes buttons Jake didn’t know he had. For the first time Jake is tempted by the true pleasure of being a submissive. But as Jake and Henry grow closer, a new player in the oil company rises up and threatens to sever their fragile connection. Suddenly the person Jake was most afraid to find becomes the one he’s most terrified to lose.
