BLURB

From Louisiana swamp rat to revivalist huckster to skilled con artist, Matthias Krall clawed his way out of poverty using his natural gifts of grift and manipulation to become the leader of an exclusive retreat center. Exploiting the guise of spiritual guru, Matthias seduces the rich and powerful into turning over their lives and fortunes to his control. But wealth and a small cadre of loyal followers can’t protect Matthias from the betrayal he knows is imminent. Everyone wants what Matthias has, except for one man who wants to destroy it. Dylan Connelly is a reporter who’s determined to prove the charismatic recluse is not only a fraud but a murderer.

Irresistibly drawn to Dylan despite the warnings in his gut, Matthias lures Dylan to his island retreat, determined to destroy his enemy once and for all.

EXCERPT

In this exclusive excerpt, Matthias and his assistant Julian, are using Rising Star’s security cameras to keep an eye on Dylan…

Julian wasn’t the only upper-level staff member who came to this room for entertainment purposes. Voyeurism wasn’t particularly Matthias’s thing, but he didn’t see the harm in it.

He ignored Julian’s discomfort and leaned forward, one palm on the edge of the desk.

“Is he sticking to the arranged story or writing a scathing denouement of our brainwashing cult?”

Julian frowned and turned back to the screen. “As far as I can tell, he’s writing about our ecology program.”

“Almost as if he knows someone is peering over his shoulder.”

Julian looked up at him, alarmed. “You think he found the cameras?”

“I think he’s a natural snoop and therefore suspects everyone else of being the same.” Matthias chuckled and straightened. “I’d be offended, if his suspicions weren’t true.”

“He’s not going to follow instructions, is he?” Julian zoomed the camera back as Dylan laced his hands behind his head and arched against the back of the chair.

“I’m sure he doesn’t intend to, but he will.”

They both watched as Dylan rested his wrists on either side of the laptop and bent his neck until his head almost reached his shoulder, one side and then the other. He pushed back his chair, stood, and reached for the ceiling, then bent over and touched his bare toes. His loose T-shirt slid toward his head, revealing sculpted back muscles and a smooth expanse of skin. Unfortunately the side view didn’t provide the angle on his ass one might hope for.

“We do have other guests, Julian,” Matthias said. “And Connelly is off limits. I thought I made that clear.”

“You did, but we have to keep an eye on him. He spent an hour after dinner wandering the halls, peeking into every unlocked room.”

“That’s good. He’s supposed to feel like he has full access. Martin will let us know if he attempts to enter a sensitive area. You’re supposed to befriend him, not stalk him.”

Julian looked as if he was going to protest but thought better of it.

“He could benefit from a little softening up. He drinks coffee all day, so it would be easy to—”

“No. This one is all mine.”

“If you say so.” Julian rolled back his chair and stood, bumping his shoulder against Matthias’s. “Can I come to your rooms?”

“Not tonight.” Matthias tried to remember how many weeks or months had passed since he and Julian had fucked. Too many, probably. The young shrink was needier than most. Not like Jace had been, but showing signs of possessiveness that had to be rooted out. “I’ll let you know.”

Julian nodded and left the room, tension radiating off him. He needed attention. Matthias decided to ask Terrance to pay him a visit. Sometimes members and even staff became obsessed with Matthias and failed to take advantage of the plentiful opportunities around them. Julian seemed to be shifting his urges toward Dylan.

Matthias turned back to the monitor. Dylan had removed the T-shirt and was doing some sort of yoga, push-up type pose. All the muscles in his arms and back were taut. There wasn’t a trace of fat on him. He lifted one leg behind him, and the thin pajama bottoms shaped his firm, clenched buttocks. When he lowered the leg and lifted the other, the fabric slipped into his crack. He reached back and jerked it free, the arm supporting him rock-steady. He was stronger than he looked, this pretty boy with a spine of steel.

Matthias had to admit the show was entertaining. He thought back to their meeting in the library. Dylan’s looks had improved with age, the beauty of youth gaining definition and an edginess only experience could provide, but looks didn’t explain his effect on Matthias.

Dylan pretended to be easygoing and gullible, but Matthias knew it was an act. The man was out to get him. The thrill of a real challenge set his teeth on edge and egged on the swelling of his cock as he watched Dylan stretch. But would Dylan behave as expected or attempt to outmaneuver Matthias at his own game? Matthias hoped for the latter. He hadn’t faced a worthy opponent in a long time.
